PUSHING PAST THE LIMITS – A POEM INSPIRED BY JULIE BERNSTEIN…

I have just watched a talk on TED.COM by Julie Bernstein Julie speaks of four lessons in creativity: experience, challenge, limitations and loss. Playing with the imagery, the principles, philosophies, insights of artists she has interviewed and her own experience gave me a palette of words and meanings. From that this poem said hello. I think it also influenced by my current reading of a book on Michael Jackson’s creative work by Joseph Vogel. The two combine…

PUSHING PAST THE LIMITS

I’m pushing past the limits

My voice found in a scream

I’m picking up the pieces

Of the pictures I have seen

I’m playing with the elements

Embracing broken places

Lines on my face speak…

Time’s erased…

The harshest spaces

I’m embracing fear…

Freedom…

Searching for that spark

I’m artist coming out about

My journey through the dark

I see beauty’s imperfections

Gold leaf in vase that cracked

Tonight, I smile of hope for our future

I smile as I look back
